FORMAL ESSAYS

  Censorship of Music
Written 2/21/2004 --- Music is being censored because people want the power to choose what the rest of the country can listen to. Some people want to censor music because they find it offending; others censor it because they feel it's inappropriate for children. This is a problem not only because mature adults are unable to enjoy censor-free music, but because it's against the Constitution: freedom of speech.
Combining Banking Education and Problem-Posing Education
Written 9/11/2003 --- When you mix banking and problem-posing education together, you have an unbeatable concept. With banking education, you're fed the information, whether it's verbal or written, but don't think about it; you don't question its source, purpose, or reasoning. But with problem-posing education, you are able to critically think about everything you have been taught, including applying it to your daily life.
Kent State Shootings: Perspective or Fact?
Written 11/19/2003 --- Ohio students were protesting against the Vietnam War during the first four days of May 1970. The Ohio National Guard was sent in to supposedly keep the protestors under control. On the fourth day, four people were killed by guardsmen, and several others were injured. This event became known as "The Kent State Shootings." The question people argue about is why the guardsmen fired.
  Lost Purpose of African Americans
Written 10/20/2003 --- African Americans were treated very poorly in the mid-1900s because of their ethnicity. The situation has improved slightly to the point where racism still exists, but laws prevent people from discriminating based on ethnicity. James Baldwin uses personal evidence and historical evidence in his essay "Notes of a Native Son" to inform readers about his education, his father's bitter life, and how blacks were treated poorly.
  The Need of Stereotypes
Written 10/10/2003 --- Every person is different, so there's no way to categorize a specific group of people, based on ethnicity and/or gender, and create a stereotype of them. Some men act like society's definition of women (emotional and sensitive); some women act like society's definition of men (violent and power-hungry).
